Take the Stress Out of Moving Day with These Tips
At long last, you’ve closed on your home and it’s finally time to move in. No doubt, move-in day is one of the most exciting days of your life. Unfortunately, it’s often one of the most stressful as well. These wise tips can help take the tension out of a move so you can relax and relish in the big moment.
Create a floor plan: Draw a floor plan of your new home before you move. Sketch in and number your furnishings the way you want them to be arranged in each room. Then tag the furniture pieces to correspond with the numbers on the floor plan so movers know where to put each piece of furniture.
Be there during packing and pick-up: If you’ve hired movers, you need to be on hand when they’re doing the packing and picking up. If you can’t be there, ask a relative or friend to stand in for you. The movers will issue an inventory of all items, which must be carefully reviewed for accuracy and legibility.
Make it easy on your friends: If you’re having friends and family members do the heavy lifting in lieu of movers, make it as easy and organized as possible for them. Have all boxes packed before they arrive, so all they have to do is pick up a box and carry it to the moving van.
Keep children and pets at bay: No one wants a barking dog or rambunctious child adding to the already chaotic nature of moving day. It’s unsafe for them and distracting for the movers. Plan to have a friend or relative baby and/or pet sit.
Plan for parking: When the moving van or truck arrives at your new place, it will need a place to park and unload. This can become complicated depending on what type of home you’re moving into. Arrange for appropriate parking space in advance so that movers can start delivering your belongings as quickly as possible once they arrive.
